EXCERPT FROM BOOK ONE:

“The man listened, then turned to me. “She says that that’s the young woman. There were two men with her who waited here, when you took her out. When she returned, they drove home.
“But this is her home.”
“No, sir. This was never her home.”
“Whaaaat?”
“One of the men was the young lady’s husband.”
“Hus…?” The words died in my throat.
“This can’t be happening,” I mumbled.
“Never trust a woman, mister,” my father always said. “She is the best liar in the world.”
“Yeah. But I’ll get to the bottom of this,” I promised. “She was married, eh? What a slut.”
Unable to believe what the old lady had said, I drove to her place of work. The supervisor in charge looked at Anita’s photo and shook his head.
“But she did work here,” I insisted. “I dropped her here several times.”
“I know every person here, because I do all the hiring,” he said. “That girl never worked for us.”
Stunned, I stared at the man. If she didn’t work here, what did she do for a living? She dressed well, she had great manners, she spoke beautifully, and she carried herself like a lady.
I thought about her husband – who was he? Had I met him? Did he set her up?
He was obviously aware of me, aware of the deception, if he waited for her when she went out with me.
Did she go back home and discuss our conversations, our dreams, did she laugh at me? Did they laugh at me? Call me a sucker? Mock my declarations of love for her?
Why? That was the big question. Did they want money? I was well off, but I certainly didn’t have the kind of dough that warranted an orchestrated deception.
Identity theft? I quickly scrambled around and checked to see if any of my credit cards were missing. All were intact.
The ring. Of course. I stood in the middle of the room and nodded to myself.
It was worth a lot. Cost me three months’ pay. She vamoosed with it the night I gave it to her. How dumb was I?
I sank into a chair nodding.
What a bitch!
I wanted to kill her. Strangle her. Tear her head off. Drive a knife through her heart like her lies did to mine. March her off to the cops and make sure she was charged with, I don’t know – something.
But in spite of everything, I missed her.
I missed her musical laughter, her twinkling brown eyes, her lovely smile, the way she held me in her arms when we made love. Her innocence in bed, her perfume which I could still smell each time I went to bed.
I squeezed my eyes shut. Anita! Anita! Anita! Why did you deceive me like this? You seemed so sweet, so sincere. I swear you loved me. Nobody could fake such love. Why, baby, why?”

Warning: strong language, racial slurs, sex scenes and is suitable for mature readers.

EXCERPT ON BOOK TWO:

Slowly, she circled Henna like a lion would a gazelle at feeding time. “You did your FACE, you did your HAIR, you lost WEIGHT…” Her mouth twisted as she glared at Henna.
“I watched you – watched you try to grab attention, watched you try to outshine me, watched you flirt and act like a floozy. You used your age to show me off and …”
“No, no, no,” Maharani!” Henna cried. “I wouldn’t dare compete with you. How could I poss…?”
“I wanted him and he chose YOU! A pathetic, clumsy nobody. YOU! ” She looked back at us who were trying to be invisible. “Can you believe it? He chose her over me? Huh?”
All three of us shake our heads in disbelief.
“What a joke Maharani,” I said, to cement my loyalty to her.
It was the first time that Henna looked at me. I cringed when I saw the visible hurt in her eyes.
“Exactly!” Queen Karisma said, and turned back to look at Henna.
Slowly, Henna staggered to her knees and held her hands in supplication. “Maharani, I am sorry for all I have done. I could never compete with someone as beautiful and enchanting as you. I was just …I guess I wasn’t thinking and things spiraled out of control. I needed to produce and heir and Vijay…I guess I was too ugly and ….” She took a deep breath.
“You are so gracious and such a great queen and I …I’m…just Henna, from the village of Geet, a country bumpkin. Please don’t even think I did this to complete with you. I beg for your forgiveness and ask you to please spare my children. Rusty’s family will take care of them. Rahul he’s just two years old and Sandiya she gets so easily scared and Sachin, he…”
“Silence!”
Henna remained on her knees with her head bowed.
“You deserve nothing. You are a harlot who has committed adultery while being married to the Crown Prince. My husband did not sleep with me for fifteen years. Did you see me having affairs? No!”
Big fat liar. She was trying to bed Rusty while her husband was alive. We heard stories of her dalliances abroad with Westerners – Rusty Carrington look-alikes.
“You will hang and your lover will hang, and to hell with your bastard children!”
Warning: Sex scenes, racial slurs, strong language.

Conversation with Eve’s Beta Reader:

 “Dear Eve
I’m sorry I couldn’t be more helpful and offer you more criticism on this book. To me it was just perfect. Beautiful. It was a pleasant surprise I must admit. I thought it was going to be a story about royalty, something that doesn’t interest me. Was I surprised.
It was more a fairy tale. Something between the Ugly Duckling and Rumpelstiltskin. But with a lot more drama, sex and suspense. I simply loved it. Cried and laughed. As usual.
I loved Henna, fell in love with Rusty and despised the queen with a vengeance! Lol! Couldn’t stop reading. As usual. Had to know what happened next.
I’m amazed that you are so diverse in your writing and genres. Kudos to you, Eve. 🙂
I’m now onto My Brother My Rival and loving it, I have to tell you. So don’t do anything else, but just keep writing. I am looking forward to more of your books.
Jean
PS:The only thing I would recommend is a change of cover. It’s …ugly. Lol. Boring. Sorry to be brutal, but you asked me to be. :)”
